KYIV — Russia launched a fresh wave of missile and drone strikes against Ukraine's energy infrastructure on Tuesday, Ukraine's energy ministry said, days after US President Donald Trump publicly claimed an energy ceasefire had been secured.
The national grid operator Ukrenergo reported emergency power cuts across the Kharkiv and Sumy regions after thermal power plants were hit overnight. Earlier this week, strikes on a Kharkiv power plant had already left tens of thousands of households without electricity, according to Ukrainian officials.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strikes as proof that Moscow had no intention of honouring any pause. Ukraine's air force said it intercepted a large share of the incoming Shahed drones but confirmed that several cruise missiles reached their targets.
The renewed bombardment directly undercuts Trump's recent assertions of diplomatic progress and increases pressure on Washington to respond. European Commission energy officials warned that repeated attacks ahead of winter risked a humanitarian crisis as temperatures fall.
The Kremlin did not confirm the specific targets. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has previously said strikes on energy facilities target sites supporting Ukraine's military. Kyiv rejected that characterisation, saying civilian heating and water systems bore the brunt of the damage.
