JPMorgan Chase reported third-quarter 2026 results on Tuesday that exceeded Wall Street consensus, as record trading activity and a recovery in dealmaking fees drove profit above analyst expectations. The New York-based bank kicked off the quarterly earnings season for major US lenders.
Chief Executive Jamie Dimon said the bank benefited from heightened market volatility and a rebound in investment banking advisory fees. Net interest income held firm despite expectations of narrowing margins, supported by continued loan demand and a steady deposit base.
Markets revenue, spanning fixed income and equities trading, posted double-digit percentage growth year on year. Investment banking fees rose as merger activity and debt issuance accelerated through the quarter, partially reversing a sluggish start to the year.
The results arrived the same morning the US Consumer Price Index was scheduled for release, giving investors a dual signal on the health of the economy and the direction of Federal Reserve policy. Major competitors Wells Fargo and Citigroup also reported results the same day.
Dimon struck a cautious tone on the broader outlook, warning of persistent risks from geopolitical tension and uncertain consumer credit trends, even as the bank raised or reaffirmed elements of its full-year guidance. "The US economy remained resilient, but we continue to monitor inflation, elevated geopolitical risks and the path of interest rates closely," Dimon said in the statement.
