The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner on Friday, October 10, in Oslo, honouring humanitarian and press-freedom work rather than any single head of state.
Committee chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes revealed the laureate at a morning press conference at the Norwegian Nobel Institute. The prize, worth 11 million Swedish kronor, recognised sustained efforts to protect civilians and uphold democratic institutions under pressure.
President Donald Trump had publicly campaigned for the award, citing his role in Middle East and other ceasefire efforts. The committee did not select him, consistent with its historical reluctance to reward recent, unresolved diplomatic initiatives.
The decision carried political weight in Washington, where allies of the president had framed the prize as recognition he deserved. Analysts at the Peace Research Institute Oslo had warned that a sitting American president was unlikely to be chosen given the committee's criteria.
The laureate will receive the award at a formal ceremony in Oslo City Hall on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death.
