Michael Mann, the director of Heat and Collateral, was discharged from hospital on Tuesday after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a gun range. A representative for Mann said the 83-year-old was recovering at home and in good spirits. Warner Bros said production plans for Heat 2 were unaffected.

Mann was taken to hospital over the weekend after the firearm accident. His representative said the wound was not life-threatening and required surgery but no lasting damage was expected. The representative did not disclose which hospital treated him or the type of weapon involved.

The accident came as Mann prepared Heat 2, his long-gestating sequel to the 1995 crime epic starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. The film adapts the 2022 novel Mann co-wrote with Meg Gardiner. Leonardo DiCaprio and Austin Butler have been widely reported as leads, with Warner Bros backing the project.

A spokesperson for Warner Bros said the studio was relieved by the director's recovery and that the timetable for the film remained in place. The spokesperson declined to give a new start date for principal photography. Mann has long been known for rigorous firearms training with his actors, a practice credited with the realism of Heat's downtown Los Angeles shootout.

The incident drew messages of support from across Hollywood, where Mann is regarded as one of the most exacting stylists of the crime genre. His most recent feature, Ferrari, was released in 2023. Heat 2 would be his first film since then and among the most anticipated studio releases of the decade.

"Michael is resting, grateful to the medical team, and already asking for the latest script pages," his representative said.
