John Lewis released its 2026 Christmas television advert on Tuesday, launching the campaign online before its first broadcast slot. The release marks the unofficial start of Britain's festive advertising season. The John Lewis Partnership said the campaign would run across television, social media and its shops until Christmas.

The advert is the fourth made for the retailer by Saatchi & Saatchi, which took over the account from adam&eveDDB in 2023. The 2025 advert, Where Love Lives, followed a father and his teenage son. It was set to a cover of Alison Limerick's 1990s house track Where Love Lives, performed by Labrinth. John Lewis has kept an early-November, midweek release in recent years, timed to dominate social media and morning television.

As in previous years, the campaign was expected to be supported by a soundtrack single from a British artist and a range of themed merchandise in John Lewis shops. The Partnership has used its Christmas advert to drive trade during the most important quarter of its year. Executives at the Partnership have previously said the festive period accounts for a large share of annual profit.

The launch puts pressure on rivals including Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Aldi to reveal their own campaigns within days. Analysts at the market research firm Kantar have tracked rising grocery price inflation through 2026, leaving households cautious about discretionary spending. Retailers have responded by leaning on nostalgia and family themes rather than overt price messages.

The Christmas advert has become a cultural fixture in Britain since John Lewis's 2011 campaign, The Long Wait. Its reception is closely watched by the advertising trade press, including Campaign magazine. Its performance on YouTube and TikTok in the first 24 hours is widely treated as an early indicator of the retailer's festive season.
