KYIV — Russia launched a fresh wave of drone and missile strikes on Ukraine's capital and surrounding regions overnight into Friday, damaging energy and communications infrastructure, Ukraine's Energy Ministry said. Emergency crews worked to restore power to affected districts.

The attacks followed an earlier strike that disrupted internet services to roughly 100,000 households in Kyiv. The Energy Ministry described a deliberate pattern of targeting the electricity grid and telecommunications ahead of the coming heating season.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko said air defences were engaged over the capital and warned residents to remain in shelters during the alert. Regional military administrations in Kyiv and neighbouring oblasts reported injuries and damage to residential buildings, according to statements posted on official channels.

European envoys at the United Nations warned this week that Russia was escalating sabotage and hybrid operations against Ukraine and its supporters. President Volodymyr Zelensky renewed appeals for additional air-defence systems, saying Ukraine's grid could not withstand a repeat of previous winters without further Western support.

Ukraine's state grid operator Ukrenergo imposed emergency power cuts in several regions to stabilise the system. The company urged consumers to reduce consumption during peak hours while repairs continued.
