BERLIN — Europe's largest consumer electronics trade fair, IFA 2026, closed at the Messe Berlin exhibition grounds on Monday, with organiser gfu Consumer & Home Electronics highlighting on-device artificial intelligence and advanced display technology as the event's dominant themes.
The six-day show, which opened on September 5, drew hundreds of exhibitors across the Messe Berlin halls. TCL's display arm, TCL CSOT, used the fair to showcase new panel innovations, while Samsung and Qualcomm demonstrated chips designed to run AI models locally on phones and laptops rather than in the cloud.
The emphasis on local processing marked a shift from previous years, when generative AI features depended heavily on remote data centres. Manufacturers argued that on-device inference improves privacy, reduces latency and lowers running costs, a message repeated across keynote sessions and hall demonstrations throughout the week.
The closing reflects intensifying competition among chipmakers ahead of the autumn product cycle. Analysts at Counterpoint and IDC have said the on-device AI push is reshaping the smartphone and PC markets, with hardware refreshes expected before the year-end shopping season.
Gfu said the fair confirmed Berlin's role as the global launchpad for consumer technology and pointed to strong exhibitor demand for the 2027 edition already booked.
