VENICE — The 83rd Venice International Film Festival concluded its awards ceremony on Wednesday at the Palazzo del Cinema on the Lido, with the jury conferring the Golden Lion for Best Film and the Volpi Cups for acting.

The closing followed the festival's decision earlier in the week to present the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement to Ellen Burstyn, the 93-year-old American actor recognised for a career spanning more than five decades. The Biennale di Venezia staged the tribute during the second week of competition.

The competition slate featured directors and stars vying for the Grand Jury Prize, the Silver Lion for best director, and the Coppa Volpi acting awards. Awards were distributed across the official selection, with the top prize positioning its winner among the season's leading contenders ahead of the autumn awards circuit.

The Venice awards traditionally serve as an early marker for Oscar campaigns, and distributors were expected to move quickly to secure release dates for the honoured titles. Industry attention now shifts to the Toronto International Film Festival, running concurrently, as buyers assess momentum from the Lido.

The Biennale said the festival's full list of prizes would be published on its official channels immediately after the ceremony, alongside jury statements explaining the selections.
