LOS ANGELES — Ryan Murphy's musical comedy 'Glee' is officially moving forward at Disney+ and Hulu, reviving the franchise about a high school show choir more than a decade after its original run ended on Fox.

The original series ran from 2009 to 2015 and became a cultural phenomenon, spawning chart-topping cover albums, concert tours and a devoted global fan base. Murphy, who co-created the show with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, returned to Disney in recent years under an overall production deal that paved the way for the revival.

Disney positioned the project for its Disney+ and Hulu platforms, which merged into a single app experience in the United States. The company has leveraged nostalgia-driven intellectual property to drive subscriptions, and 'Glee' joins a slate of legacy titles revived for streaming audiences.

The reboot drew immediate reaction from former cast members and fans across social media. Discussion centered on whether original stars would return and how the series would address the deaths of actors Cory Monteith, Mark Salling and Naya Rivera, whom Murphy has previously said he would honor in the revival.

"'Glee' meant everything to a generation of outsiders who finally saw themselves on screen," one longtime fan account wrote, reflecting sentiment widely shared as news of the revival spread online.
