AUCKLAND — Ryan Fox was expected home in New Zealand on Tuesday to national celebrations after becoming only the second Kiwi man to win the Open Championship, following Bob Charles in 1963. Fox, 39, secured the Claret Jug at Royal Birkdale with a birdie on the 72nd hole, edging his rivals in a tense finish on Sunday.

New Zealand Golf welcomed the victory as a milestone for the sport. The son of former All Blacks first five-eighth Grant Fox, he had previously been better known in Europe than at home before the breakthrough win.

New Zealand Golf chief executive Dean Murphy praised the result as an inspiration for junior players. Clubs across the country reported increased interest in the sport following the win. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon congratulated Fox publicly, calling the victory a proud moment for the nation.

The triumph carried a reported winner's cheque of around $3.1 million and moved Fox up the world rankings, strengthening his position for future major appearances and the season's remaining events. Sponsors and broadcasters signalled expanded coverage of his upcoming schedule.

Fox is expected to return to competition on the DP World Tour and PGA Tour in the coming weeks, with organisers of several tournaments highlighting his newly elevated profile as a former major champion.
