NEW DELHI — India concluded its 2026 Padma Awards investiture at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday, with actor Mammootty, playback singer Alka Yagnik and actor R Madhavan among the cultural figures decorated by the President.
The Padma Awards, conferred annually in the categories of Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, rank among India's highest civilian honours. The 2026 list, announced earlier in the year by the Ministry of Home Affairs, spanned recipients from cinema, classical and popular music, sport, science and social service.
Yagnik, one of Hindi cinema's most recorded playback voices, received the Padma Bhushan. Her appearance drew particular attention online after she previously disclosed a rare sensorineural hearing condition, prompting fans to express concern for her health alongside congratulations across social media platforms.
The investiture was attended by ministers, family members and figures from India's entertainment and cultural establishment. Honourees and their relatives shared images from Rashtrapati Bhavan, while regional media in Kerala and Tamil Nadu highlighted the recognition of Mammootty and Madhavan as a moment of pride for southern cinema.
The Padma honours conclude a stretch of high-profile cultural recognition in India, coinciding with success events for recent film releases and ongoing Pride Month programming in the capital.
