IKEA has opened global pre-orders for the updated Varmblixt smart lamp, the company confirmed Friday, following widespread media attention generated by the product's unveiling earlier this week. The Swedish home furnishings giant says the lamp — recognisable for its bulbous, donut-shaped silhouette — now integrates with major smart home platforms including Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa, marking a significant step in IKEA's ongoing push into connected home technology.
The Varmblixt line, which originally debuted as a purely decorative piece, has become one of IKEA's more culturally resonant product launches in recent years, attracting attention from design-focused consumers and home tech enthusiasts alike. The addition of tunable white and warm lighting controls via the IKEA Home smart app is expected to broaden its appeal well beyond its original aesthetic niche.
Retail analysts at GlobalData noted that IKEA's timing is strategic, capitalising on a sustained post-pandemic appetite for affordable smart home upgrades. 'They've found a sweet spot between design and utility,' said London-based analyst Maria Thornton. 'The Varmblixt's visual identity gives IKEA a product that competes on style as well as function, something they've historically struggled with in the smart lighting category.'
The lamp is expected to retail at approximately $59.99 in the US and €54.99 in the EU, keeping it firmly within IKEA's accessible pricing philosophy. Pre-orders placed before May 1 will qualify for early delivery ahead of the product's official in-store rollout, scheduled for late May 2026 at IKEA locations across 30 markets.
Consumer response on social media has been notably enthusiastic, with the lamp trending in home décor communities on Reddit and Pinterest through Thursday evening. IKEA's Ingka Group did not disclose pre-order volume figures but said demand had 'exceeded internal projections' within the first hours of availability.
