'The Odyssey' crossed ₹175 crore at the Indian box office on Thursday, distributors confirmed, as the epic held firm into its third week across multiplex chains including PVR Inox and Cinepolis. The milestone underscored the film's unusual staying power in a competitive summer season.
Universal Pictures released 'The Odyssey' worldwide in mid-July, with India emerging as one of its strongest overseas markets. The film, starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, had drawn ₹158 crore in its first fortnight, according to trade tracker Sacnilk, before continuing steady collections through subsequent weekdays.
Exhibitors credited premium formats for sustaining demand, with IMAX and large-format screenings accounting for a large share of daily earnings. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh noted that word-of-mouth had kept occupancy healthy despite the arrival of newer titles, and that Nolan's brand carried weight among Indian audiences accustomed to his previous releases.
The performance strengthened Universal's position in India during a period when Hollywood titles have faced pressure from domestic-language releases. Studio representatives attributed the film's endurance to growing appetite for large-scale spectacle among urban moviegoers, particularly in metropolitan centres such as Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru.
Analysts expect 'The Odyssey' to continue accumulating collections through the weekend, with the film positioned to cross ₹200 crore in India in the coming days if current trends persist across major circuits.
