HOUSTON — The Houston Texans hosted the Los Angeles Chargers at NRG Stadium on Friday in a preseason contest offering both coaching staffs an early look at younger players and roster hopefuls. The game marked one of the opening fixtures of the NFL's 2026 exhibition schedule.

Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans planned to limit snaps for established starters, including quarterback C.J. Stroud, in favour of evaluating backups and roster fringe players. The Texans entered the exhibition season looking to firm up depth along their offensive line and at wide receiver.

Los Angeles head coach Jim Harbaugh used the fixture to assess his own reserve units, with quarterback Justin Herbert expected to see only limited action. Both organisations treated the game primarily as an evaluation exercise, prioritising conditioning and situational reps over the result.

Preseason openers rarely determine much beyond depth-chart competition, but roster spots and special-teams roles often hinge on such outings. Ryans and Harbaugh said individual performances would inform decisions ahead of the league's final roster cuts later in August.

The Texans and Chargers each face further preseason fixtures before Week 1, with both franchises carrying playoff ambitions for the 2026 regular season.
