PHILADELPHIA — Zack Wheeler was at his overpowering best on Monday evening at Citizens Bank Park, shutting down the Miami Marlins over seven innings as the Philadelphia Phillies cruised to a 5-0 victory in the series opener. Wheeler struck out nine batters and allowed just three hits, continuing what has been a dominant stretch for the right-hander in the early weeks of the season.

The Phillies offence wasted little time supporting their ace. Bryce Harper drove in two runs with a double in the third inning, and Kyle Schwarber added a solo home run in the fifth, his ninth of the young season, extending Philadelphia's lead to four runs. Trea Turner added an RBI single in the seventh to put the game firmly out of reach.

Miami, still rebuilding under a youth-heavy roster, managed only three baserunners through the first seven innings and struggled to generate any sustained threat against Wheeler's combination of high-velocity fastball and sharp slider. The Marlins' lineup, one of the thinnest in the National League by most offensive metrics, has now been shut out twice in their last seven games.

The Phillies bullpen closed out the final two innings without incident, preserving the shutout and giving Philadelphia its fourth win in five games. The result keeps the Phillies firmly in the upper tier of the National League East standings as the calendar turns toward May.

"Wheeler was simply electric tonight," manager Rob Thomson said after the game. "When he's commanding all four pitches like that, he's as good as anyone in the league. We felt good going in with him on the mound." The series continues Tuesday with a scheduled afternoon start at Citizens Bank Park.
