BALTIMORE — Gunnar Henderson delivered once again at Camden Yards on Friday night, slugging a two-run home run in the fourth inning to power the Baltimore Orioles to a 4-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals. The win gave Baltimore a series advantage heading into the weekend and continued the Orioles' promising early-season form under manager Brandon Hyde.
Henderson, who entered the night batting well above .300 with multiple extra-base hits already in April, turned on an inside fastball from Royals starter Seth Lugo and drove it deep into the left-field bleachers. The Camden Yards crowd of over 28,000 responded with a roar that underscored the expectations surrounding the 24-year-old third-year shortstop this season.
Baltimore's pitching staff held the Royals' offense largely in check. Starter Corbin Burnes worked six solid innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out seven. The Royals' Bobby Witt Jr. provided Kansas City's brightest moment with an RBI double in the fifth inning, but Baltimore's bullpen slammed the door in the final three frames, with closer Felix Bautista recording his third save of the young season.
Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro acknowledged the difficulty of facing Baltimore on the road early in the season. 'Their lineup is deep, and Henderson is as dangerous as anyone in the American League right now,' Quatraro said postgame. 'We had our chances but couldn't string it together when it mattered.'
For the Orioles, Friday's win builds on a strong home stand and reinforces the belief that Baltimore remains a legitimate AL contender. With Henderson, Adley Rutschman, and Anthony Santander all healthy and productive, the club appears well-positioned to compete in a tough AL East division race. The two teams are scheduled to meet again Saturday afternoon.
