KYIV — SpaceX restored full Starlink connectivity to Ukrainian military units on Monday, a day after President Donald Trump denied ordering any restrictions that had degraded drone operations along the front line, according to Ukraine's Ministry of Digital Transformation.
Ukrainian commanders reported intermittent Starlink outages over the weekend that disrupted reconnaissance and strike drone coordination in the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions. Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's deputy prime minister for digital transformation, said connectivity to affected sectors had been re-established and that his ministry was in direct contact with SpaceX.
The disruption followed reporting that some Starlink terminals near the front had been geofenced or throttled. Trump, speaking to reporters on Sunday, said he had given no such instruction, while SpaceX did not confirm whether any policy change had been applied.
Starlink has been central to Ukraine's battlefield communications since 2022. The episode exposed Ukraine's continued dependence on a single commercial provider for critical military connectivity.
Kyiv officials have accelerated talks with European satellite operators, including Eutelsat's OneWeb, and pushed forward domestic alternatives to reduce reliance on SpaceX infrastructure. "Connectivity on the front line is a question of lives, not commerce," Fedorov said in a statement. "We are grateful for Starlink, but Ukraine cannot depend on the decisions of any single company or individual."
