GREENBELT, Maryland — NASA confirmed on Tuesday that its Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe had completed initial commissioning after Sunday's launch from Cape Canaveral, with mission controllers reporting healthy telemetry as the spacecraft began its cruise toward Lagrange Point 1.
The spacecraft, developed by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, is designed to study the boundary of the heliosphere, the vast bubble of solar wind that shields the Solar System from interstellar radiation. The probe carries ten scientific instruments to map the region where the Sun's influence meets interstellar space.
IMAP is bound for a gravitationally stable point roughly 1.5 million kilometres from Earth on the sunward side, the same neighbourhood that hosts other solar observatories. The journey to L1 will take about three months before the science phase begins. Two secondary payloads launched alongside it to monitor space weather and the exosphere.
Mission scientists at the Applied Physics Laboratory said the data would improve forecasting of solar storms that can disrupt satellites, power grids and astronaut safety. Principal investigator David McComas of Princeton University has described IMAP as a successor to the earlier IBEX mission, capable of far sharper maps of the heliospheric boundary.
The launch continues a busy period for NASA heliophysics, following a series of missions aimed at understanding how solar activity propagates toward Earth. Full science operations are expected to begin in early 2027 once the spacecraft settles into its halo orbit.
