NEW DELHI — The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is expected to announce Friday that downloads of the redesigned Aadhaar mobile application have crossed 25 million, building on the 21 million figure reported earlier this week and underscoring the rapid adoption of India's national biometric identity infrastructure among smartphone users.
The app, which allows India's 1.4 billion registered Aadhaar holders to access a digital version of their identity card, share masked Aadhaar numbers, and complete face-authentication checks without physical documents, has seen explosive uptake since its relaunch in early 2026. UIDAI officials are expected to hold a press briefing in New Delhi on Friday to outline the next phase of the platform's rollout, including integration with state-level welfare disbursement systems and private-sector KYC pipelines.
The momentum reflects a broader Indian government strategy to deepen the Aadhaar ecosystem beyond its original function as a welfare-linked identifier. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has been coordinating with banks, telecom operators, and health insurers to accept app-based Aadhaar verification in lieu of physical document submission, a move analysts say could reduce identity fraud and streamline onboarding for hundreds of millions of users.
Privacy advocates and opposition lawmakers have raised concerns about the pace of expansion, warning that centralised biometric data repositories carry systemic risks if security protocols are not kept current. The Internet Freedom Foundation and other civil society groups are expected to respond to Friday's announcement by renewing calls for an independent audit of UIDAI's data storage and access-log practices.
The Aadhaar app milestone also carries commercial implications. Fintech firms including PhonePe, Paytm, and several neobank startups have built identity-verification workflows directly on UIDAI's application programming interfaces, and a larger active user base translates into faster, cheaper customer acquisition. Industry observers are watching Friday's briefing closely for any signal that UIDAI plans to open new API tiers or introduce a premium verification service for enterprise clients.
