LOS ANGELES — One day after Blackmagic Design officially unveiled DaVinci Resolve 21, post-production facilities across Hollywood and London's Soho district began rolling out the free update on Wednesday, with early adopters reporting significant performance improvements in the software's newly introduced Photon rendering engine.

The update, announced Tuesday by Blackmagic Design CEO Grant Petty, represents one of the most substantial overhauls to the professional editing and colour grading platform in several years. DaVinci Resolve 21 introduces Photon, a GPU-accelerated rendering architecture that the company claims delivers up to three times faster output on Apple Silicon and NVIDIA RTX hardware compared to its predecessor.

Several high-profile post-production houses, including facilities that handle streaming content for major platforms, confirmed they had begun compatibility testing on Wednesday morning. Colorists and editors at prominent Los Angeles-based studios noted that the Photon renderer's handling of HDR and wide colour gamut workflows appeared markedly smoother in early tests, though full pipeline validation typically takes several days before studios commit to feature projects.

The timing of the release is notable given that NAB Show — the broadcasting and media technology industry's flagship annual conference — concluded recently, and Blackmagic's decision to announce and ship simultaneously rather than preview at the trade show has drawn commentary from industry observers. Analysts at media technology consultancy Devoncroft Partners noted the move underscores Blackmagic's strategy of direct-to-user delivery, bypassing traditional trade show cycles.

DaVinci Resolve 21 is available as a free download for the standard version, with the Studio edition priced at a one-time fee of $295. Blackmagic Design confirmed that existing Studio licence holders receive the update at no additional cost, a policy that has long differentiated the company from subscription-based competitors including Adobe Premiere Pro.
