Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Sunday denied reports that he is preparing a 2028 presidential campaign, telling reporters his sole focus was serving President Donald Trump at the Pentagon. NBC News had reported he was privately weighing a run.

The denial followed a weekend of intense speculation after multiple people familiar with Hegseth's thinking told NBC News he had discussed a potential candidacy. The reports positioned the former Fox News host among the earliest names floated for the post-Trump Republican field.

Hegseth is also weighing a second mass summoning of senior military commanders to Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, according to the Wall Street Journal. The unusual gatherings have drawn criticism from retired officers who view them as politicizing the officer corps.

Allies of Vice President and other 2028 contenders privately welcomed the disavowal, wary of an early scramble that could fracture Trump's coalition. Trump, asked about the reports, praised Hegseth's loyalty while declining to endorse any successor.

"My only campaign is for the warfighter and for this President's agenda," Hegseth said, dismissing the reporting as premature Washington chatter designed to sow division within the administration.
