MOUNT VERNON, Va. — The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association opened sales of its limited-edition Semiquincentennial bourbon on Wednesday, timed to coincide with the United States' 250th anniversary celebrations. The whiskey was distilled using methods linked to Washington's own distillery.
Washington operated one of the largest whiskey distilleries in the early republic at Mount Vernon. The association reconstructed the site and produces spirits using period techniques, with proceeds supporting the estate's preservation and education programmes.
The release arrives days before July Fourth, when Mount Vernon traditionally hosts naturalisation ceremonies and patriotic events drawing thousands of visitors to the Virginia waterfront site. The bourbon will be available in limited quantities through the estate's shops and online store.
The America250 commemoration, marking the 1776 Declaration of Independence, has prompted numerous cultural institutions to launch anniversary products and exhibitions. The bourbon connects modern visitors with Washington's role as a farmer and distiller, beyond his military and political legacy.
Mount Vernon's distillery, located near the estate's gristmill, regularly sells small-batch spirits to fund operations. The association reports that demand for commemorative items has risen as the semiquincentennial approaches, with the broader anniversary year expected to draw record attendance through 2026.
