Target, which drew widespread attention this week for its 49-percent markdown on a seven-piece acacia wood patio set originally priced at $770, confirmed Wednesday that outdoor living categories are among its strongest-performing segments heading into the holiday. The Minneapolis-based retailer said shopper engagement with patio, garden, and entertaining products has surged in recent days, a trend echoed across the broader home goods sector.

Wayfair and Home Depot both confirmed to trade publications that year-over-year outdoor category sales are up double digits for the two-week window preceding Memorial Day 2026, driven in part by consumers prioritising home-based entertaining as restaurant and travel costs remain elevated. Lifestyle editors at publications including Better Homes & Gardens and Architectural Digest noted a pronounced consumer shift toward 'the outdoor room' concept, where patios and decks are being outfitted with rugs, lighting, and bar carts as extensions of interior living space.

Social media platforms including Instagram and TikTok have amplified the trend, with 'patio reveal' content accumulating tens of millions of views in May alone. Influencers and home design accounts have partnered with brands to showcase budget-friendly transformations, with acacia and teak wood furniture dominating aesthetic preferences among the 25-to-44 demographic.

Consumer spending analysts at Morning Consult cautioned that while patio sales are robust, the broader discretionary environment remains uneven — a signal also reflected in softer-than-expected quarterly results from major retailers. Still, the outdoor living boom appears durable: industry group the American Home Furnishings Alliance projected Wednesday that total outdoor furniture sales for the Memorial Day promotional period will reach approximately $3.2 billion, up from $2.9 billion in 2025.
