DULUTH, Minn. — The city of Duluth extended its golden anniversary celebration of Grandma's Marathon on Monday, with tens of thousands of runners, spectators, and visitors filling Canal Park and the lakefront for the race weekend's traditional post-event festivities. The 50th edition of the iconic Minnesota race drew a record field, and Monday brought the communal close to what organizers called the most significant edition in the event's history.

Saturday's race was headlined by Dakotah Popehn's historic third championship title, cementing her status as one of the event's all-time greats. On Monday, the Minnesota native was expected to attend public recognition events organised by Grandma's Marathon officials, including a ceremony honouring past champions as part of the 50th anniversary programming.

Grandma's Marathon Executive Director Shane Bauer said the milestone edition attracted more than 20,000 registered participants across all race distances, with the full marathon seeing its highest completion numbers since the pre-pandemic era. 'We've been planning this 50th anniversary for years, and the community of Duluth showed up in full force,' Bauer said in a statement released Sunday evening.

Canal Park businesses reported near-capacity footfall throughout the weekend, with hotels along the Lake Superior shoreline fully booked from Friday through Monday. Local restaurants and breweries introduced 50th anniversary specials, and the Duluth lakewalk hosted outdoor vendor markets that remained open through Monday afternoon for out-of-town visitors making their way home.

Organizers also used the anniversary to announce an expanded partnership with the Minnesota Department of Tourism to promote Duluth as a destination running city, citing the marathon's consistent economic impact of over $30 million annually on the region. The 51st edition is already scheduled for the third Saturday of June 2027.
