Walt Disney Studios confirmed on Sunday that its live-action adaptation of 'Moana' has officially surpassed $1 billion in cumulative worldwide box office gross, making it the highest-grossing film of early 2026 and the latest entry in Disney's increasingly lucrative remake strategy.

The film, which opened in U.S. theaters in late June 2025 and expanded internationally through the summer and fall, has enjoyed an unusually long theatrical run bolstered by strong word-of-mouth, IMAX re-releases, and awards season buzz. Dwayne Johnson reprises his voice role as Maui in a live-action/CGI hybrid performance, while newcomer Catherine Laga'aia stars as Moana. Director Thomas Kail, known for his work on 'Hamilton,' brought a theatrical sensibility that critics praised for elevating the material beyond a simple retread.

The milestone cements Disney's position atop the global box office for 2025-2026, following a period in which the studio faced questions about audience fatigue with its remake formula. Industry analysts note that 'Moana' benefited from the enduring global popularity of the original 2016 animated film and its chart-topping soundtrack, as well as Johnson's unmatched international star power. Domestic earnings account for roughly $410 million, with the remaining $590 million coming from international territories, led by China, the United Kingdom, and Brazil.

"This validates the strategic investments we've made in tentpole filmmaking that resonates across cultures and demographics," said Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman in a statement. The studio is already developing a live-action 'Moana' sequel, with Johnson attached to return.

The billion-dollar achievement also arrives at a significant moment for the broader industry, which has seen theatrical attendance gradually recover since the disruptions of the early 2020s. Competing studios, including Universal and Warner Bros., have taken note of Disney's continued success with the remake model, with several similar projects now in active development across Hollywood. Box office trackers project that 'Moana' could reach $1.1 billion before concluding its theatrical window in April.
